EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking frescoes at Rila Monastery in Bulgaria. As the largest and most renowned Eastern Orthodox monastery in the country, it holds immense cultural, historical, and architectural significance. Founded by Ivan of Rila in the 10th century, this sacred site has withstood destruction and reconstruction throughout its existence. In the 15th century, the Ottomans ravaged the monastery; however, it was resiliently rebuilt towards the end of that same century. Tragically, a devastating fire engulfed it in 1833. But thanks to the visionary architect Alexi Rilets and his team's efforts between 1834 and 1862, this masterpiece was restored to its former glory. The enchanting frescoes adorning its walls are truly awe-inspiring. With over 1200 paintings depicting biblical scenes and saints, they offer a glimpse into centuries-old religious artistry. Each brushstroke tells a story of devotion and spirituality. Recognized as an emblematic example of Bulgarian National Revival or Bulgarian Renaissance architecture, this magnificent complex earned a well-deserved spot on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1983. Frans Sellies' photograph captures not only these remarkable frescoes but also their vibrant colors and intricate details with precision. It serves as a testament to both his artistic talent behind the lens and his appreciation for Bulgaria's rich cultural heritage.
