Boat-lift no. 1 on the Canal du Centre, Hainaut, Belgium (Unesco world heritage)
The four hydraulic boat-lifts on a short stretch of the historic Canal du Centre are industrial monuments of the highest quality. Together with the canal itself and its associated structures, they constitute a remarkably well-preserved and complete example of a late-19th-century industrial landscape. Of the eight hydraulic boat-lifts built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the only ones in the world which still exist in their original working condition are these four lifts on the Canal du Centre. On the photo is the first of the boat-lifts (Ascenseur nA'1).
In 1998 the four boat-lifts were added to the list of Unesco world heritage sites

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Boat-lift no. 1 on the Canal du Centre in Hainaut, Belgium, a UNESCO world heritage site. The four hydraulic boat-lifts featured here are not only industrial monuments of exceptional quality but also represent a remarkably well-preserved example of a late-19th-century industrial landscape. Among the eight hydraulic boat-lifts built during that era, these four lifts on the Canal du Centre are the only ones in the world that still exist and function in their original working condition. The photograph captures the first boat-lift (Ascenseur nA'1) with its majestic presence against an idyllic backdrop. Its steel structure stands tall amidst lush green grass and under a vast sky, symbolizing both resourcefulness and resilience. This image transports us back to an era when this engineering marvel played a crucial role in transportation and agriculture. As we admire this piece of history frozen in time, it reminds us of the significant impact of industrialization during the 19th century's industrial revolution. The intricate details of this man-made structure constructed from cast iron showcase architectural brilliance. In 1998, recognizing its historical significance, these four boat-lifts were rightfully added to UNESCO's prestigious list of world heritage sites. Through Frans Sellies' lens, we can appreciate not only their functional purpose but also their aesthetic beauty as they continue to stand as testaments to human ingenuity and innovation.
