EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century engraving showcases the distinguished coat of arms of Sherard, Lord Leitrim. A treasured item from a renowned publication, this print exudes historical significance and artistic beauty. The Latin inscription on the engraving, "HOSTIS HONORI INVIDIA" meaning "Envy is the foe of honour" adds an intriguing layer to the visual narrative. The Sherard family's lineage is deeply intertwined with Ireland's rich history. Bennet Sherard, who was bestowed with the title Baron Leitrim in 1627, holds a prominent place within this noble bloodline. Notably, he also held the esteemed position of Earl of Harborough. County Leitrim in Connacht province served as their ancestral home. John Lodge, Deputy Keeper of Records in Birmingham Tower and a respected genealogist, meticulously crafted this exquisite image for his publication titled "The Peerage of Ireland or A Genealogical History". Published in 1789, it stands as a testament to Lodge's dedication to preserving Irish nobility through engravings like these. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back to an era where coats of arms symbolized power and prestige. It serves as a reminder that behind every emblem lies centuries-old stories and legacies waiting to be explored. Whiteway Fine Art Storehouse has preserved this remarkable piece for all admirers seeking glimpses into Ireland's aristocratic past.
