Young girl and two children trying to escape from rats
Two children and a young girl trying to escape from rats which were plaguing the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany, in 1284. The event inspired the legend of the Pied Piper who removed the rats by playing his musical instrument but when the townsfolk refused to pay him, he lured away most of their children. From " The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert Browning, illustrated by Kate Greenaway, published by George Routledge & Sons, London, Glasgow, Manchester and New York in 1888

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of desperation and fear as a young girl and two children attempt to escape from the relentless onslaught of rats plaguing the town of Hamelin in 1284. The haunting image serves as a visual representation of the legendary tale that has captivated audiences for centuries - the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Inspired by this event, Robert Browning penned his famous poem, while Kate Greenaway's illustration brings it to life with vivid detail. The artist skillfully portrays the terror on their faces as they desperately seek refuge from the swarming rats. Their wide eyes reflect both their innocence and vulnerability in this dire situation. The viewer can almost hear their frantic footsteps echoing through narrow alleyways, accompanied by scurrying sounds behind them. Yet, hidden within this chilling scene lies an even darker twist to the story. As history tells us, when faced with eradicating these pests, the townsfolk refused to pay the piper for his services rendered. In retaliation, he cunningly lured away most of their children using his enchanting musical instrument. This thought-provoking print not only transports us back in time but also serves as a reminder that actions have consequences. It invites us to ponder our own choices and consider whether we are willing to honor agreements made or face potential repercussions like those unfortunate inhabitants of Hamelin so long ago.
