EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving, published in 1881, showcases the regal figure of Henry I (c. 876-936), a prominent member of the noble family of Liudolfinger. Hailing from Saxony, he served as Duke from 912 until his ascent to King of East Francia in 919, ruling until his death in 936. The intricate woodcut engraving is based on a fresco by Alfred Rethel, a renowned German painter who lived from 1816 to 1859. The original fresco adorned the Roemer at Frankfurt / Main but tragically fell victim to destruction during World War II in 1944. However, this exquisite print allows us to appreciate and preserve its beauty for generations to come. Rendered with an oriental style reminiscent of ancient woodblock art dating back centuries earlier, this image transports us back to the medieval era when Henry I reigned over Germany. The sculpture-like depiction captures his commanding presence and royal stature within Romanesque aesthetics. As we delve into this piece of history through visual artistry, we are reminded not only of Henry I's significant role in shaping German culture but also how art can transcend time and preserve moments that would otherwise be lost forever.
