Clydside Docks; Cranes and seagulls silhouetted against the sky

17th July 1954: Cranes and seagulls silhouetted against the sky at a dockyard on the River Clyde in Scotland. The shipyards are the major employers of the area and, while the demand is high, the industry supports the local economy. In July 1954 the Clyde shipyards had about 2, 000, 000 gross tons of shipping under construction and factories were manufacturing enough engines to supply the local trade and export the surplus. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Clyde shipyards in Scotland on a summer day back in 1954. Silhouetted against the vast sky are towering cranes, their mechanical arms reaching towards the heavens, while seagulls gracefully soar above them. The River Clyde serves as a backdrop, reflecting the industrious spirit that flows through this region. During this era, shipbuilding was at its peak, making it a vital source of employment for the local community. With approximately 2 million gross tons of shipping under construction and factories producing enough engines to meet both domestic and international demand, the industry thrived. This economic boom supported not only those directly involved in shipbuilding but also various other sectors within the area. Bert Hardy's expert lens captures an intriguing contrast between man-made machinery and nature's free-spirited creatures. The absence of people allows us to focus solely on these majestic cranes and seagulls as they coexist harmoniously against an expansive sky. As we gaze upon this archival piece from Picture Post magazine, we are transported back to a time when Scotland's commercial docks were bustling with activity. It serves as a reminder of how industries shape economies and communities alike – leaving an indelible mark on history that continues to inspire generations today.
