Boys On The Bridge
1st October 1955: A group of boys passing under the elaborate metalwork gateway of a bridge in the Scottish industrial town of Kilmarnock. Kilmarnock is home to a variety of industries, including the Johnnie Walker whisky distillery and John Lawsons tartan factory, as well as others less traditional to Scotland such as Saxone shoes and Glenfield and Kenny, manufacturers of high quality hydraulic equipment. It is hoped that the diversity of these enterprises will protect the towns economy in the event of a slump so that the low rate of unemployment, 1.5 per cent of the working population, does not increase. Boys On The Bridge - A Glimpse into Kilmarnock's Industrial Heart
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print transports us back to the bustling streets of Kilmarnock, Scotland in 1955. As a group of young boys pass under the ornate metalwork gateway of a bridge, we are reminded of the town's rich industrial heritage. Kilmarnock was not only home to traditional Scottish industries like whisky distilleries and tartan factories but also boasted more unconventional enterprises such as shoe manufacturing and hydraulic equipment production. This diverse range of businesses aimed to safeguard the town's economy against potential slumps, ensuring that unemployment remained at an impressively low rate of 1.5% among its working population. The intricate architectural details adorning the bridge railings and arches add a touch of elegance to this scene, showcasing both the craftsmanship prevalent in Scottish culture and the town's commitment to creating visually appealing structures. The boys walking through this man-made marvel symbolize hope for a bright future amidst economic uncertainties. Photographer Malcolm Dunbar skillfully captures this moment with his lens, emphasizing not only the physical beauty surrounding these young individuals but also their role within their community. Their presence on this bridge serves as a reminder that even in times of change and progress, it is our shared experiences that truly shape us. This archival photograph invites us to reflect on Kilmarnock's past while contemplating how its industrious spirit continues to shape its present-day identity.
