Batad Rice Terraces of Cordillera
The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, the first-ever property to be included in the cultural landscape category of the World Heritage List. The majority of the Rice Terraces were constructed in a short time span after the Spanish arrival to the Philippines. The Ifugao Rice Terraces reach a higher altitude and were built on steeper slopes than many other terraces. The Ifugao complex of stone or mud walls and the careful carving of the natural contours of hills and mountains to make terraced pond fields, coupled with the development of intricate irrigation systems, harvesting water from the forests of the mountain tops, and an elaborate farming system. The Ifugao Rice Terraces illustrate the remarkable ability of human culture to adapt to new social and climate pressures as well as to implement and develop new ideas and technologies. The rice terraces of the Cordilleras are the only monuments in the Philippines that show no evidence of having been influenced by colonial cultures. Owing to the difficult terrain, the Cordillera tribes are among the few peoples of the Philippines who have successfully resisted any foreign domination and have preserved their authentic tribal culture. The history of the terraces is intertwined with that of its people, their culture, and their traditional practices

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Batad Rice Terraces of Cordillera, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. As the first-ever property to be included in the cultural landscape category, these terraces hold immense historical and cultural significance for the Philippines. Constructed shortly after Spanish arrival, these terraces stand as a testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of human culture. The Ifugao people meticulously carved stone or mud walls into the natural contours of hills and mountains, creating intricate pond fields supported by elaborate irrigation systems. These terraces reach higher altitudes and steeper slopes than others, showcasing their remarkable engineering prowess. What makes these rice terraces even more extraordinary is that they remain untouched by colonial influences. The Cordillera tribes have successfully resisted foreign domination throughout history, preserving their authentic tribal culture amidst challenging terrain. The history of these terraces intertwines with that of its people – their traditions, practices, and way of life. This print captures not only the breathtaking beauty of nature's harmony with human innovation but also serves as a reminder of our ability to adapt to social and climate pressures while embracing new ideas and technologies. Michael Gerard Santos Ceralde's artistic portrayal allows us to appreciate this unique heritage site's splendor while honoring its rich cultural legacy.
