Destruction of the Sennacherib Army
" Vintage engraving from the 1870 of a scene from the Old Testament by Gustave Dore showing the destruction of the army of Sennacherib. In 701 BC, a rebellion backed by Egypt and Babylonia broke out in Judah, led by King Hezekiah. In response Sennacherib sacked a number of cities in Judah. He laid siege to Jerusalem, but soon returned to Nineveh, with Jerusalem not having been sacked, in order to put down an attempted coup. This event was recorded by Sennacherib himself, by Herodotus, and by several Biblical writers. According to the Bible, the siege failed because an angel went forth and struck down 185, 000 men in the Assyrian camp."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage engraving from 1870 by Gustave Dore captures a powerful scene from the Old Testament, depicting the Destruction of the Sennacherib Army. The artwork portrays a significant event in ancient history, specifically during 701 BC when rebellion erupted in Judah led by King Hezekiah. In response, Sennacherib, an Assyrian king, launched military invasions and laid siege to Jerusalem. According to biblical accounts and historical records, this siege ultimately failed due to divine intervention. An angel was said to have descended upon the Assyrian camp and struck down an astonishing 185,000 soldiers. This miraculous event spared Jerusalem from destruction. Dore's intricate illustration showcases his mastery of classical style as he brings this ancient battle to life. The print adds a sense of darkness and intensity to the scene while highlighting key details such as armed forces engaged in conflict. Beyond its historical significance, this artwork also holds religious importance for Judaism and Christianity alike. It serves as a reminder of spiritual faith prevailing over seemingly insurmountable odds. As we gaze upon this antique woodcut print today, we are transported back in time to witness both the violence of war and the triumphs that can be achieved through spirituality. Duncan1890's reproduction allows us to appreciate not only Dore's artistic talent but also the enduring power of faith throughout human history.
