In 1156 Henry II of England, a member of the House of Anjou, took the castle from his brother Geoffrey after he had rebelled for a second time. Henry favoured the ChAteau de Chinon as a residence: most of the standing structure can be attributed to his reign and he died there in 1189. Early in the 13th century, King Philip II of France harassed the English lands in France and in 1205 he captured Chinon after a siege that lasted several months, after which the castle remained under French control.); French, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intense and dramatic "Siege of the Chateau of Chinon" depicted in the Grandes Chroniques de France, a renowned illuminated manuscript from the 14th century. Created on vellum by an anonymous French artist, this masterpiece captures a pivotal moment in history. The scene portrays the Siege of Chinon that took place in 1205 when King Philip II of France relentlessly attacked Henry II's stronghold. The intricate details reveal soldiers equipped with helmets and armed with bows and arrows, fiercely defending their fortress against catapults launched by their adversaries. The towering walls of the castle provide a formidable backdrop to this epic battle. Notably, Henry II had favored Chinon as his residence during his reign as King of England. However, after Geoffrey rebelled for a second time, Henry seized control of the castle from him in 1156. Tragically, it was within these very walls that Henry met his demise in 1189. This historic event marked a turning point as Philip II successfully captured Chinon after months-long siege warfare. From then on, this iconic fortress remained under French control. Through its vivid colors and meticulous craftsmanship, this illuminated manuscript transports us back to an era filled with turmoil and power struggles between two mighty kingdoms - England and France. It serves as both a testament to medieval artistry and an invaluable historical document capturing one chapter among many in Europe's tumultuous past.
