Jack Hills (1867-1938), 1896 (b / w photo)

XJF391586 Jack Hills (1867-1938), 1896 (b/w photo) by English Photographer, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Rt Hon John Waller Hills, PC, MP, b. 2 Jan 1867, Belgrave Road, Pimlico, London, d. 24 Dec 1938, Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington, London. Politician and angler, the second son of Herbert Augustus Hills of Highhead Castle, Cumberland, a barrister who was a judge of the International Court of Appeal, Cairo, until 1903, and his wife, Anna, daughter of William Robert Grove, the scientist and judge. He was educated at Eton College and at Balliol College, Oxford. He read for the bar, but was admitted a solicitor in 1897, when he became a partner in the firm Hills and Halsey. He married Stella, the eldest daughter of Herbert Duckworth. step-daughter of Leslie Stephens. Shortly after the marriage Stella was taken ill with peritonitis, and she died in July 1897. Hills made over the income on her marriage settlement to her half-sisters Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. With Vanessa he developed a close relationship, though marriage was ruled out by her position as his deceased wifes sister, while to Virginia he was the subject of tart comment and an object of humour. He re-married in 1831, to Mary Grace Ashton who bore him a son, the future Sir Andrew Ashton Waller Hills.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Jack Hills (1867-1938) in 1896, taken by an English photographer. Jack Hills was a prominent figure of his time, known for his political career and passion for angling. Born on January 2nd, 1867, in Belgrave Road, Pimlico, London, he grew up to become a respected politician and member of Parliament. Hills hailed from a distinguished family background; his father Herbert Augustus Hills was a barrister and judge of the International Court of Appeal in Cairo. His mother Anna was the daughter of William Robert Grove, a renowned scientist and judge. Educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford, Hills initially pursued law but eventually became a solicitor in 1897. He formed the partnership firm Hills and Halsey while also engaging in various political endeavors. Tragedy struck early in his personal life when his first wife Stella fell ill with peritonitis shortly after their marriage. She tragically passed away in July 1897. In her memory, Hills generously transferred her marriage settlement income to her half-sisters Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. Despite societal constraints preventing them from marrying due to Vanessa being Stella's sister-in-law by blood relation, Jack developed a close relationship with Vanessa Bell. On the other hand, Virginia Woolf often made humorous remarks about him. In 1831, Hills remarried Mary Grace Ashton who gave birth to their son Sir Andrew Ashton Waller Hills - destined for greatness himself.
