EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1911 captures a heartbreaking scene of child labor in America. The Teixiera family, living on Lombardt St. in New Bedford, Massachusetts, is depicted working in the fields. Mary J., just 11 years old, and Manuel, only 10 years old, are shown picking 40 measures a day for a mere 7 cents each. In the foreground of the image, you can see their scoops and pail used for harvesting. Despite being so young, these children are expected to work alongside their mother for several weeks more, sacrificing precious time that should be spent in school. Out of eighteen workers captured in this photo, it is shocking to note that two of them are under the age of 12. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the harsh realities faced by many families during this time period. It sheds light on the exploitation of children for cheap labor and highlights the urgent need for social reform to protect vulnerable members of society. The innocence lost on these young faces speaks volumes about the hardships they endure at such a tender age. This photograph serves as an important historical document capturing a dark chapter in American history that must never be forgotten or repeated.
