EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a piece of history in the form of a women's outerwear shawl from 1855 France. Made of wool, this intricate shawl is a beautiful example of fashion from the 19th century. The geometric pattern features three vertical bands with blocks of color, creating a visually striking design.
The shawl is believed to be an imitation Kashmiri shawl or plaid, showcasing the influence of different cultures on fashion during this time period. The short ends are finished with color blocks and fringed edges, adding to the overall elegance of the piece.
With its woven inscription indicating it was displayed at the Paris Exposition in 1855, this shawl holds historical significance as well as aesthetic beauty. It provides a glimpse into the fashion trends and craftsmanship of that era.
Displayed in Glasgow Museums in the UK, this print allows viewers to appreciate not only the artistry and detail of the shawl but also its cultural and historical context. It serves as a reminder of how clothing can reflect society and tradition while also being a work of art in its own right.
