Joseph Gung'l (1810-1889) was a Hungarian composer and conductor. After starting life as a schoolteacher, he became first oboist at Graz, and, at twenty-five, bandmaster of the 4th regiment of Austrian artillery. His first composition, a Hungarian march, written in 1836, attracted some notice, and in 1843 he was able to establish an orchestra in Berlin. In 1853 he became bandmaster to the 23rd Infantry Regiment at Brunn and in 1873 he conducted with great success a series of promenade concerts at Covent Garden, London. Gung'l's dances number over 300, and his music is characterized by the same easy flowing melodies and well-marked rhythm that distinguish the dances of Strauss, to whom alone he can be ranked second in this kind of composition.); © Elton Collection, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print of the Railroad Steam Engine Galop, dating back to around 1870, offers a glimpse into the musical world of that era. The sheet music cover features three piano forte pieces composed and dedicated by Joseph Gung'l to the Misses Wildes of Thornhill. Published by Robert Cocks & Co., who were Music Sellers to Her Majesty Queen Victoria and Emperor Napoleon III, this artwork showcases the intricate connection between music and locomotion during the industrial revolution. Joseph Gung'l, a Hungarian composer and conductor, is known for his over 300 dances characterized by flowing melodies and well-marked rhythm. His compositions rival those of Johann Strauss in their elegance and charm. This lithograph not only captures the essence of Gung'l's work but also serves as a historical artifact representing the cultural significance of railway travel in the 19th century. The detailed illustration of a steam engine on this sheet music cover transports us back in time to an era when trains symbolized progress and modernity. It is a testament to both artistic creativity and technological advancement, making it a valuable piece within the Elton Collection at Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust in Telford, Shropshire, UK.
