EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of respite for the Coldstream Guards during their time in South Africa around 1900. The image, taken by Underwood & Underwood, showcases the soldiers taking a well-deserved break on their arduous Transvaal Campaign. In this stereoscopic photograph from the Boer War era, we see the 1st and 2nd battalions of the Coldstream Guards resting along a wayside. They are depicted enjoying a luncheon amidst the rugged terrain of South Africa. During this conflict, both battalions played vital roles in Lord Methuen's 1st Division after arriving in Cape Town from Southampton. Notably, they traded their traditional bearskin hats for khaki uniforms with white helmets and puggarees. The historical significance of this image lies not only in its portrayal of soldiers at rest but also as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by these men during one of Britain's most challenging military campaigns. This particular photo is part of an extensive collection titled "South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1" published by Underwood and Underwood. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in history. Bridgeman Images has made this snapshot available through Fine Art Finder, allowing us to appreciate and reflect upon the courage displayed by those who served during that tumultuous period without commercial intentions or use mentioned here
