This is one of two offsets both from the same original drawing. PAH3850 is much fainter than this offset. They have been approximately dated to 1665 by the watermark on the paper. This work is an unsigned ship portrait, showing the 'Vereenidge Provincien' from the port quarter. On the tafferel is a lion rampant, on a shield draped with laurels. Above it is a figure standing on the shield. There are an array of arms and trophies on the rail. Immediately below the tafferel are crossed anchors. There are two shields on the counter. On the starboard side is a lion rampant and two crossed anchors on the port side, which represents the Admiralty of Amsterdam. The drawing is inscribed 't schip de vereenigde provintije', which serves to identify the vessel.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait print captures the majestic 'Vereenigde Provincien', a 48-gun ship built circa 1665 and last mentioned in 1667. Created by the talented artist Willem van de Velde, the Elder, this piece showcases intricate details of the vessel from the port quarter. The tafferel features a lion rampant on a shield draped with laurels, symbolizing strength and victory.
The array of arms and trophies on the rail further emphasizes the ship's prowess at sea. Crossed anchors below the tafferel add a nautical touch to the composition. Two shields on the counter represent different aspects of Dutch maritime history - one displaying a lion rampant and two crossed anchors for Amsterdam's Admiralty.
Despite being an unsigned work, this ship portrait is unmistakably identified as 't schip de vereenigde provintije'. The offset printing technique used for this piece allows for precise replication of Van de Velde's original drawing, capturing every detail with clarity.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this print serves as a timeless tribute to Dutch naval heritage and craftsmanship. It transports viewers back to the Golden Age of Sail, where ships like 'Vereenigde Provincien' ruled the seas with grace and power.
