EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful lithograph captures the heroic defenders of Saragossa during the siege of 1808, a momentous event in Spanish history. Led by General Jose de Palafox, a priest and two peasants bravely held the city against the French forces with an ill-equipped army of citizens for months on end. The city's resistance was so fierce that the French were forced to temporarily lift the siege until December.
The image immortalizes Agustina Zaragoza, a peasant maid who played a crucial role in defending Saragossa and became a symbol of courage and resilience. Her story inspired poets like Lord Byron, who praised her bravery in his work "Childe Harold."
The scene depicted in this print is one of chaos and heroism, as ordinary citizens band together to protect their city from foreign invaders. The black-and-white composition adds to the dramatic intensity of the moment, highlighting the sacrifices made by those who fought for their homeland.
This historical artwork serves as a reminder of the strength and determination shown by the people of Saragossa during one of their darkest hours. It is a testament to human spirit and resilience in times of adversity.
