Although there is no inscription to suggest that these were awarded as trophies, they are among the earliest examples of polo memorabilia belonging to a British Officer.
Described by the Badminton Library book of Riding and Polo as A The Father of PoloA, there is no doubt that Sherer, following a period of service on the North West Frontier, was instrumental in introducing the sport to Europeans. In 1859, as a young lieutenant and adjutant of the 44th (Sylhet) Regiment of (Bengal) Native (Light Infantry) he, and Captain Robert Stewart, Superintendent of Cacha, founded a European polo club. Five years later, Sherer and his team of seven Manipur men nicknamed A The BrothersA took the game to Calcutta. It immediately became very popular, so much so that Sherer was entertained with a great banquet in the Indigo Mart.); eNational Army Museum; Indian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable silver mounted desk set of two polo pony hooves, belonging to Captain J F Sherer. Created by the Indian School in the 19th century, this exquisite piece is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. Engraved with the insignia of Captain Joseph Ford Sherer from the 49th Bengal Native Infantry, these hooves are believed to date back to around 1865. Although there are no hallmarks present, they bear the stamp of Allan and Hayes, Calcutta, along with a crescent tally mark. While it is uncertain whether these hooves were awarded as trophies, they hold great significance as one of the earliest examples of polo memorabilia owned by a British Officer. Known as "The Father of Polo". Captain Sherer played a pivotal role in introducing this sport to Europeans during his service on the North West Frontier. In collaboration with Captain Robert Stewart, he founded a European polo club in Cacha while serving as lieutenant and adjutant of the 44th (Sylhet) Regiment of (Bengal) Native (Light Infantry). Five years later, Sherer and his team known as "The Brothers" brought polo to Calcutta where it quickly gained popularity among locals and expatriates alike. To honor his achievements and contributions to this beloved sport, Sherer was celebrated with an extravagant banquet held at Indigo Mart. This extraordinary desk set serves not only as a testament to his legacy but also represents an important milestone in polo's history.
