EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Grey Horse Inn, located on the Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne. Painted by George Balmer in the 1830s, this oil on canvas artwork measures 61.2x84.0 cm and is currently housed at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. The image showcases a bustling scene of ships lined up along the Quayside, with medieval buildings serving as their backdrop. Originally home to wealthy merchants, these buildings had fallen into disrepair by this time and were occupied by families living in slum conditions. Unfortunately, the Grey Horse Inn and its surrounding area met a tragic fate during the devastating fire that occurred on October 6th, 1854. However, through Balmer's brushstrokes, we are transported back to a time when this inn stood proudly amidst a thriving maritime community. George Balmer was renowned for his depictions of shipping scenes and played an influential role in capturing Newcastle's rich maritime history through his artistry. This print serves as a poignant reminder of both the vibrant past of Newcastle's Quayside and the challenges faced by those who lived there. It stands as a testament to Balmer's skillful portrayal of historical moments and invites us to reflect upon our own connection to these stories from long ago.
