Asoka's Missionaries set up an Edict Pillar at Lauriya Nandangarh, BC 244 (litho)

8661017 Asoka's Missionaries set up an Edict Pillar at Lauriya Nandangarh, BC 244 (litho) by Ruith, Horace van (1839-1923); Private Collection; (add.info.: Asoka's Missionaries set up an Edict Pillar at Lauriya Nandangarh, BC 244. The most important of the Mauryans and one of three outstanding emperors in Indian history was Asoka (BC 273-232), grandson of Chandragupta. The horrors of the Kalinga war, waged early in his reign, made him turn to the peaceful doctrines of Buddha, and by 259 he had become an emperor-monk. Before his death he had been the greatest personal distributor of missionaries ever known, and is one of the few men who have controlled the faith of a large portion of mankind. Part of his method was to set up edict pillars along highways of communication inscribed with his religious and administrative views. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph depicts a significant moment in history as Asoka's Missionaries set up an Edict Pillar at Lauriya Nandangarh in 244 BC. The image, created by Horace van Ruith, showcases the profound impact of Emperor Asoka on Indian society during his reign from 273 to 232 BC. Asoka, known as one of the most important Mauryan emperors and a key figure in Indian history, underwent a transformation after witnessing the devastation of the Kalinga war early in his rule. He embraced the peaceful teachings of Buddha and became an emperor-monk dedicated to spreading his message far and wide. One of Asoka's methods for disseminating his religious and administrative views was through edict pillars placed along major communication routes. These pillars served as tangible symbols of his influence and commitment to promoting peace and harmony among his people. The scene captured in this lithograph symbolizes not only Asoka's missionary efforts but also his enduring legacy as a ruler who wielded immense power while advocating for compassion and tolerance. It is a reminder of the lasting impact that individuals can have on shaping the beliefs and values of future generations.
