Man Clutching a Horse in Water, after Poussin's "Deluge" (recto), c. 1816 (pen and brown ink and brush and brown wash over graphite)
XOS5883990 Man Clutching a Horse in Water, after Poussin's "Deluge" (recto), c. 1816 (pen and brown ink and brush and brown wash over graphite) by Gericault, Theodore (1791-1824); 18x26.2 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Theodore Gericault (French, 1791-1824)
France, 19th century
Gericault's drawing of a man clutching the mane of a horse as they struggle together to stay afloat is a direct copy of a detail from one of Nicolas Poussin's (1594-1665) most celebrated paintings, The Deluge, or Winter (see photo). Small in scale but monumental in feeling, the sheet exemplifies the artist's "antique manner" of drawing, which he began to develop around 1815. This style, with its heavy contour lines and broad washes, developed in tandem with Gericault's renewed interest in copying works of art from the past, such as prints after ancient sculpture and works by Raphael (1483-1520), Michelangelo (1475-1564), and Poussin.)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Theodore Gericault's meticulous reproduction of a powerful scene from Nicolas Poussin's renowned painting, "The Deluge, or Winter". Gericault's drawing showcases a man desperately clutching the mane of a horse as they both struggle to stay afloat in turbulent waters. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of pen and brush, creating an exquisite composition that conveys the monumental emotions within. Measuring at 18x26.2 cm, this small-scale artwork exemplifies Gericault's "antique manner" of drawing which he began developing around 1815. With heavy contour lines and broad washes, he skillfully recreates Poussin's masterpiece while infusing it with his own artistic flair. Gericault’s renewed interest in copying works from the past is apparent in this piece as he pays homage to great artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Poussin himself. By meticulously replicating their works through prints after ancient sculptures and paintings, Gericault not only honed his skills but also demonstrated his deep appreciation for art history. Housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this print by Bridgeman Images allows viewers to appreciate the mastery behind Gericault’s interpretation. It serves as a testament to his dedication towards capturing intense human emotions amidst tumultuous circumstances – an enduring theme throughout art history that continues to captivate audiences today.
