EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning detail of the vault in the Aula Costabiliana, also known as the Hall of the Treasure, located in Palazzo Costabili or Palazzo di Ludovico il Moro in Ferrara, Italy. Painted by Benvenuto Tisi da Garofalo during the 16th century, this fresco depicts a female figure amidst an exquisite setting. The ceiling of this grand hall is adorned with a large balcony where Oriental rugs hang gracefully. From this vantage point, a gallery of characters can be seen leaning over and displaying their love for arts, music, and poetry. The scene is almost like a showcase of aristocracy at that time with portraits exuding rare elegance. Above the balcony lies a turquoise sky embellished with a gazebo filled with branches laden with fruit delicately knotted around the balustrade. This room serves as an hortus conclusus or secret garden created by its owner to impress notable guests. Intricate details fill every corner of this mesmerizing composition. A luxurious wooden rose window intricately carved and gilded takes center stage within an illusionistic opening. Surrounding it is an ornate frieze adorned with grotesque motifs featuring medallions depicting mythological scenes and ancient Roman stories. This print beautifully captures not only Garofalo's artistic prowess but also transports viewers into a world brimming with opulence and cultural appreciation. It serves as both a testament to historical artistry and an invitation to delve into Ferrara's rich heritage at Palazzo Costabili.
