Coloured lithograph from Views in Affghaunistaun from sketches taken during the Campaigns of the Army of the Indus, by W L Walton after Captain Sir Keith A Jackson, Bt, 4th (Queens Own) Light Dragoons, published by W H Allen and Co and T McLean.
In this view of the Maidan Valley, which was situated near Kabul, Walton has depicted two seated tribesmen watching the long column of the Army of the Indus during its march on the Afghan capital. The Army had set out from the Punjab in December 1838 and by late March 1839 had reached Quetta. By the end of April it had taken Kandahar without a fight before advancing on the fort at Ghazni in July. The latter was stormed and the following month the Army entered Kabul.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph, titled "Ruined Tower at Maidaum Army Marching, 1839" transports us back to a significant moment in history. Created by Captain Sir Keith A. Jackson and published by W H Allen and Co and T McLean, this print is part of the collection "Views in Affghaunistaun from sketches taken during the Campaigns of the Army of the Indus". The scene depicted showcases the Maidan Valley near Kabul, where two tribesmen are seated, observing with curiosity as a long column of soldiers from the Army of the Indus marches towards Afghanistan's capital city. The lithograph beautifully captures both the grandeur and tension surrounding this military campaign. The journey undertaken by the Army of the Indus began in December 1838 when they set out from Punjab. By late March 1839, they had reached Quetta before conquering Kandahar without resistance in April. In July, they stormed Ghazni's fort before finally entering Kabul in August. This image serves as a testament to not only Captain Sir Keith A. Jackson's artistic talent but also to his firsthand experience as part of this historic expedition. It offers viewers a glimpse into an important chapter in British military history and provides valuable insight into Afghanistan's landscape during that time. Displayed proudly at London's National Army Museum, this print stands as a reminder of past triumphs and challenges faced by those who served their country on foreign soil.
