On the basis of style, the rapier in this painting belonged to a distinctive group of sword hilts decorated between about 1570 and 1600. It was probably made in northern Italy. The son of a Piedmontese architect, Tanzio spent most of his life in northern Italy, but worked briefly in Rome and southern Italy, mainly Naples. EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "Portrait of a Man, c. 1620" is a stunning example of the artistic talent and attention to detail displayed by Italian painter Tanzio da Varallo. The unknown man depicted in this oil on canvas painting exudes an air of confidence and sophistication. One striking feature of this portrait is the inclusion of a meticulously rendered rapier, a sword typically worn with civilian attire during that era. This detail provides insight into the subject's status and perhaps his involvement in duels or other forms of combat. The artist's style reflects influences from Caravaggio, as seen in the dramatic realism infused into Tanzio's own elegant and decorative approach. Born to a Piedmontese architect, Tanzio spent most of his life in northern Italy but briefly worked in Rome and southern Italy. The subject is dressed in traditional costume, donning a black long coat adorned with lace ruffs that were fashionable during the 17th century. His distinguished moustache adds to his aura of authority. Measuring at 125x99.5 cm (framed) or 97.8x72.2 cm (unframed), this masterpiece now resides at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA thanks to Leonard C. Hanna Jr. 's generous contribution through the Leonard C. Hanna Jr Fund. This print captures every intricate detail and essence present within Tanzio da Varallo's original artwork, making it an exquisite addition for any art enthusiast or collector seeking to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship prevalent during the seventeenth century.
