The Artists Rifles in Camp, 1884 (oil on canvas)
2975503 The Artists Rifles in Camp, 1884 (oil on canvas) by Merry, Godfrey Pitney (1861-1950); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: In August 1884 the 20th Middlesex (Artists ) Rifle Volunteers held their camp at Aldershot. Attendance at these summer camps was voluntary and usually not very well attended, while the long Easter weekend camp was much more popular. Here the volunteers are shown preparing for drill. Some are almost ready, equipped with blanket rolls and Snider rifles, while the soldier buying fish still needs to change his fashionable, but non-regulation, two-tone shoes.
Following the formation in 1859 of the Volunteer Force for national defence, the regiment was raised in 1860 as the 38th Middlesex (Artists) Rifle Volunteers. It was so-named as it was mainly composed of painters, sculptors, engravers, musicians, architects and actors. One of the first officers was Frederick (later Lord) Leighton, who was subsequently both Honorary Colonel of the regiment and President of the Royal Academy of Arts. Other famous volunteers include John Everett Millais, William Morris and Holman Hunt.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Artists Rifles in Camp, 1884" is a captivating snapshot of the 20th Middlesex (Artists) Rifle Volunteers during their summer camp at Aldershot. Painted by Godfrey Pitney Merry, this oil on canvas print captures the essence of camaraderie and dedication among these talented individuals. In this scene, we witness the volunteers preparing for drill. Some are already equipped with blanket rolls and Snider rifles, ready to embark on their training exercises. However, one soldier stands out as he engages in an unconventional activity – buying fish. His fashionable two-tone shoes may be stylish but do not adhere to regulation standards. The formation of the regiment in 1860 was unique, drawing together painters, sculptors, engravers, musicians, architects, and actors who shared a passion for both artistry and military service. Notable figures such as Frederick Leighton (later Lord Leighton), John Everett Millais, William Morris, and Holman Hunt were among its ranks. This print from Fine Art Finder offers us a glimpse into history while celebrating the artistic spirit that thrived within this regiment. It serves as a reminder that even amidst military duties and discipline; creativity can flourish. Displayed at the National Army Museum in London under Bridgeman Images' copyright protection; it encapsulates an era where talent transcended boundaries between artistry and armed forces.
