EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exquisite detail and profound meaning of Bernard van Orley's masterpiece, "The Last Judgement and the Seven Works of Mercy". Commissioned by the Almoners of the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, this triptych is a testament to both artistic brilliance and religious devotion. In the centre panel, Christ sits upon a rainbow, symbolizing God's covenant with humanity as he passes final judgement. Assisting him is Archangel Michael, weighing souls to separate the just from the damned. The former are welcomed into paradise while the latter face condemnation in Hell. Atop each wing sit Virgin Mary and John the Baptist accompanied by six apostles. What makes this artwork truly remarkable are its intricate details depicting acts of mercy. The seven works include feeding the hungry, giving drink to those who thirst, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, comforting the sick, ransoming religious prisoners, and burying the dead. These acts serve as reminders for Christians to practice kindness and charity towards others. Van Orley's skillful brushwork brings life to every figure depicted – angels hovering above with wings spread wide open; saints gazing down with solemn expressions; sinners facing their fate with anguish; coffins representing mortality; tombstones marking eternal rest. "The Last Judgement and Seven Works of Mercy" stands as a powerful testament to Christian beliefs portrayed through artistry that transcends time. This print allows viewers to appreciate every nuance captured within this monumental altarpiece – a visual journey through biblical narratives that continue to inspire faith today.
