Corpus from a Crucifix, c. 1130-1140 (polychromed wood)

499942 Corpus from a Crucifix, c.1130-1140 (polychromed wood) by French School, (12th century); h:111.10 w:20.20 d:7.80 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: By the 11th century, monumental crucifixes carved from wood and painted were a common feature of church interiors. Placed on or suspended above the main altar, they reminded viewers of Christs sacrifice on behalf of mankind at the Crucifixion, an event reenacted every time Mass was celebrated on the altar below. Crucifixes also invited prayer and meditation on Christs role as Redeemer. This fragmentary but finely carved corpus, or body of Christ, once belonged to such a crucifix.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of religious art from the 12th century. The "Corpus from a Crucifix" is an exquisite example of polychromed wood carving, created by the French School during this period. Measuring at approximately 111.10 cm in height, 20.20 cm in width, and 7.80 cm in depth, it now resides within the esteemed Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. During the Middle Ages, crucifixes like this one were commonly found inside churches as significant focal points for worship and reflection. Placed above or on the main altar, they served as powerful reminders of Christ's ultimate sacrifice during his crucifixion - an event commemorated through Mass celebrations below them. The finely carved corpus featured in this fragmentary artwork once formed part of such a monumental crucifix. Its intricate details and delicate polychrome paintwork speak to the exceptional craftsmanship employed by its creator. Today, viewers are invited to engage with this historical artifact not only as a symbol of Christian faith but also as an object that encourages prayerful contemplation on Christ's role as Redeemer. This photograph allows us to appreciate both the beauty and significance behind this ancient wooden sculpture – a testament to centuries-old devotion and artistic mastery.
