EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Flemish tapestry from the 16th century, titled "The History of David and Bathsheba". The first panel of this series depicts Bathseba at her bath, surprised by the presence of King David. Created in Brussels in 1505, this masterpiece is crafted with gold, silk, and wool fabric. Measuring an impressive 350x415 cm, this tapestry currently resides in the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso in Spain. Its origins trace back to Manuel I of Portugal's collection before being included in Princess Maria's dowry when she married Prince Philip of Spain. After Philip II's death in 1598, it was recorded in a post-mortem inventory. The anonymous model adds an air of mystery to this artwork as we are left to wonder who posed for Bathseba. Despite its unknown manufacture and artist, the intricate details and vibrant colors speak volumes about the skill and craftsmanship involved. Now housed at the Tapestry Museum under National Heritage (Patrimonio Nacional), this piece continues to captivate viewers with its historical significance and artistic beauty. Through Paul Maeyaert's lens, we can appreciate every delicate stitch that brings Bathseba's surprise to life.
