EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Elizabeth I engraved striking horizontal table clock, crafted between 1590-1600. The clock, made of gilt brass, is a masterpiece by Nicholas Vallin (d. 1603). The case of the clock features stepped-moulded sides adorned with intricate geometric bands above arcaded courtyard vistas. Each central arch presents a different view, adding to the visual allure of this timepiece. The latched base panel boasts an engraved border and bears the signature "VALLEN" within a scroll-engraved cartouche. The dial plate measures 8.9x8.9 cm and is made of square gilt-brass. It exhibits beautifully engraved fan spandrels on its knurled later bezel and a white metal champleve chapter ring with flowerhead half-hour markers. The center of the dial displays a 24-hour ring surrounded by delicate engravings. The movement mechanism consists of square plates supported by four square section baluster pillars. It incorporates a fusee with a later chain for the time train and a fixed steel barrel for the strike train. The back plate features steel turn catches (one replaced) and houses a calibrated countwheel for striking on bell (although currently lacking). This remarkable piece from private collection exemplifies Vallin's exceptional craftsmanship during Elizabethan times, showcasing both beauty and functionality in perfect harmony.
