EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable collection of silverware from the 18th century. From left to right, we are presented with three exquisite pieces crafted by renowned American silversmiths. The first piece, a mug dating back to 1725-35, was skillfully created by John Burt (1692-1745/46). Its intricate design and delicate engravings reflect the craftsmanship of that era. Next in line is a miniature tankard made around 1757 by Samuel Edwards (1705-62). Despite its small size, this tiny masterpiece exhibits incredible attention to detail and demonstrates Edwards' exceptional talent as an artisan. The final item on display is a cann produced circa 1760 by Benjamin Burt (1729-1805), hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. This elegant vessel exemplifies the refined taste prevalent during that time period. These extraordinary silver pieces are part of Historic New England's esteemed collection in Boston. The miniature tankard was generously bequeathed by Mrs. Howard Van Sinderen (1928.33), while the other two items were donated by Eleanor Fayerweather (1993.650 & 651). As we admire these treasures captured in this photograph, we gain insight into the rich history and artistic legacy of American silverware production during the 18th century. This image serves as a testament to the skillful hands and creative minds behind these masterpieces that have stood the test of time.
