Repin was very interested in the history of Ukraine, its native region, as well as its Cossack population, of which the Zaporogues were an independent, free and nomadic group. In the summer of 1878, the historian and philosopher Mstislav Prakhov introduced him to an insulting letter supposedly written in the 17th century to the Ottoman sultan Mohammed IV by Zaporogues Cossacks who refused to join his army. The painting evokes this episode. However, a good ten years will be necessary for the artist to document himself in Ukraine and carry it out.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Ilya Repin's famous painting, "The Zaporogues Cossacks Writing a Letter to the Sultan of Turkey". Created between 1880 and 1891, this oil on canvas masterpiece can be found in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia. Repin's deep fascination with Ukrainian history and its Cossack population is evident in this artwork. The Zaporogues were an independent and nomadic group of Cossacks who played a significant role in Ukraine's past. Inspired by a letter from the 17th century written by these defiant warriors to Ottoman sultan Mohammed IV, Repin beautifully captures this historical episode. However, before bringing his vision to life on canvas, Repin dedicated over ten years to researching and immersing himself in Ukrainian culture. This commitment shines through as he skillfully portrays the scene. In this image, we see a glimpse of the artist's sketch capturing the essence of the painting. It transports us back to early seventeenth-century Ukraine when brave Cossacks refused to join the Ottoman army. The attention to detail is remarkable – from their traditional costumes and weaponry to their intense expressions as they pen their powerful message. "The Zaporogues Cossacks Writing a Letter to the Sultan of Turkey" not only celebrates Ukraine's rich history but also highlights Repin's mastery as an artist. Through his brushstrokes, he brings alive an important moment that resonates with viewers even today.
