EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured engraving, titled "Daedalus and Icarus or Dedalo ed Icaro" transports us to the mythical world of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Created by Luigi Ademollo in 1832, this illustration beautifully captures the tragic tale of Daedalus and his son Icarus. In this scene from Book VIII, we witness Daedalus, a renowned inventor and architect, alongside his young son. Having escaped from Crete after their daring flight from Minos' court, they now find themselves soaring through the sky with wings made of feathers and wax. The image portrays both wonder and foreboding as father and son navigate the heavens. The delicate details of their wings fluttering against a backdrop of clouds evoke a sense of freedom and exhilaration. However, lurking beneath this ethereal beauty is an ominous reminder: Icarus' fatal flaw. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are reminded that hubris can lead to tragedy. The story warns us about the dangers of reaching too high or defying natural limits—a lesson echoed throughout Greek mythology. Ademollo's skillful rendering brings life to Ovid's words—capturing both the vulnerability and audacity present in Daedalus' creation. This print serves as a timeless testament to humanity's eternal pursuit for flight while serving as a cautionary reminder that even our most ambitious dreams can come crashing down if not tempered with wisdom. Through its intricate details and poignant symbolism, this engraving invites us into an ancient mythological realm where imagination takes flight but ultimately meets its demise amidst the vastness of celestial wonders.
