Scholar in Landscape, 1601 (ink on paper)
6124999 Scholar in Landscape, 1601 (ink on paper) by Liu Yuanqi (1555-c.1632); 334.3x99.1 cm; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; (add.info.: Liu Yuanqi was a pupil of Qian Gu (1508-78) who, in turn, was a direct disciple of Wen Zhengming (1470-1559), one of the four great masters of the Wu school. Not surprisingly, this painting accords well with sixteenth-century Suzhou literati values and ultimately the late style of Wen Zhengming. This large scroll, intended for a main hall (da zhongtang), is one of Lius earliest and most ambitious paintings. The majority of his output was on a small, intimate scale, and this monumental scroll, nearly eleven feet high, appears to have been his masterwork. A lone scholar is shown crossing a small bridge in the bottom foreground. He gazes up past a rustic retreat toward a pavilion situated high on a rocky promontory in front of a cascading waterfall. In spite of the densely patterned surface, the composition is clearly articulated and the brushwork generally relaxed and easy. The basic theme, flattened and somewhat mannered trees, pictorial structure, and dotted textures are all reminiscent of the ink landscapes produced by Wen Zhengming during the last decades of his career.); Photo: © Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; Gift of Ruth and Bruce Dayton

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the essence of Liu Yuanqi's masterpiece, "Scholar in Landscape, 1601". This ink on paper artwork showcases the artist's skill and adherence to sixteenth-century Suzhou literati values. Liu Yuanqi, a pupil of Qian Gu and disciple of Wen Zhengming, pays homage to his predecessors by incorporating their signature styles into this monumental scroll. Measuring over eleven feet high, this painting was intended for a main hall and is considered Liu's masterwork. The composition features a lone scholar crossing a small bridge in the foreground while gazing up at a pavilion perched atop a rocky promontory. A cascading waterfall adds movement and depth to the scene. Despite its densely patterned surface, the brushwork in this piece appears relaxed and easy. The flattened trees, pictorial structure, and dotted textures are reminiscent of Wen Zhengming's late career ink landscapes. This print allows viewers to appreciate every intricate detail of Liu Yuanqi's work. It highlights his ability to create harmonious compositions that reflect traditional Chinese landscape aesthetics. Gifted by Ruth and Bruce Dayton to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, USA, this artwork serves as an important reminder of the rich cultural heritage preserved within museum walls.
