This print showcases Pehriska-Ruhpa, a Minatarree or big-bellied Indian, captured by the talented artist Karl Bodmer. The image is part of an atlas documenting the travels of Maximilian, Prince of Wied, in the interior of North America. Pehriska-Ruhpa stands proudly in his Minitari dance costume adorned with intricate quillwork and a fringe made from ermine fur. Locks of human hair and dyed hoarsehair add to the ornate beauty of his attire. His necklace features otter skin embellished with small trade beads and grizzly bear claws. In this portrait, Pehriska-Ruhpa holds a large pipe while wearing striking face paint that adds depth to his expression. The details captured by Bodmer's brush bring forth not only the physical appearance but also the spirit and character of this Native American individual.
