EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Moennitarri Warrior in the Costume of the Dog Dance, as captured by renowned Swiss artist Karl Bodmer. The warrior depicted is Pehriska-Ruhpa, also known as "Two Ravens" who was a prominent leader of the Hidatsa Dog Society. In this image, he is seen performing a traditional dance while adorned in an elaborate costume. Pehriska-Ruhpa's striking blue headdress is crafted from feathers sourced from magpies and wild turkeys, adding to its vibrant allure. Draped over his shoulder is a long cloth mantle, symbolizing his status and authority within the society. In his right hand, he holds a society emblem—a rattle made of deer hooves or claws attached to a beaded stick—while clutching a bow and arrows in his left hand. Commissioned by Maximilian, Prince of Wied in 1836 for their travels through North America's interior, Bodmer expertly captures the essence of this cultural tradition through his detailed illustration. This particular print comes from Tableau 23 in Maximilian's atlas documenting their journey. The Fine Art Finder presents this remarkable piece that not only offers us insight into Native American customs but also highlights Bodmer's exceptional skill as an artist. It serves as a testament to preserving history through art and allows us to appreciate the rich heritage and traditions of indigenous communities like the Hidatsa Dog Society.
