EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Hunting of the Grizzly Bear" takes us back in time to the untamed wilderness of North America in the 19th century. The image, captured by Karl Bodmer, showcases a dramatic scene along the shores of the mighty Missouri River. A massive grizzly bear can be seen feasting on a carcass while hunters armed with guns approach from a distance, arriving by boat. The intensity of this moment is palpable as nature's raw power clashes with human determination. Bodmer's meticulous attention to detail brings every element to life - from the rugged terrain to the majestic bear itself. This photograph is part of an extensive series commissioned by Maximilian, Prince of Wied, who sought to document their arduous journey through uncharted territories. As we gaze upon this remarkable tableau, we are transported into an era where man and beast coexisted on equal footing. It serves as a reminder of our primal connection with nature and our relentless pursuit for survival. The monochromatic tones add depth and texture to this already evocative composition. Displayed proudly at Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois, this print not only captures a significant historical moment but also pays homage to Bodmer's exceptional talent as an artist and chronicler of his time.
