EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Christian illuminated album dating back to the late 17th century. Measuring at an impressive 135.9x221.8 cm, this masterpiece was created by the Ethiopian School during the same period. Originally believed to be a devotional prayer book, this ensemble consists of forty-four exquisitely illustrated leaves in the First Gondarene style. Vibrant and animated scenes from the Bible come to life on these pages, alongside depictions of Ethiopian monks, worshippers, and saints. Among them is Tekle Haymanot (c. 1215-c. 1313), an esteemed Ethiopian saint who founded a renowned monastery. The script adorning these pages is written in Ge'ez, an ancient language now exclusively used within liturgical contexts. Unfortunately, over time, the original order of these magnificent illustrations has been lost. Acquired by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, USA through The Robert J. Ulrich Works of Art Purchase Fund, this remarkable artwork offers us a glimpse into Ethiopia's rich religious heritage and artistic tradition. As we explore each meticulously painted detail and immerse ourselves in its spiritual narrative, we are reminded of the profound influence that Christianity had on African culture during this era—particularly within Ethiopia—and how it continues to inspire faith and devotion today.
