A three-quarter-length portrait seated in captain's undress uniform of the Indian Navy. The presence of a gold ring on the cuff may mean that the painting was done when he was Acting Superintendent or Commodore. After recovering from a severe attack of typhus in 1811 when in the Royal Navy, Hawkins transferred to the Bombay Marine. He was very effective there and received the thanks of the British Ministry twice and of the Bombay government seven times. EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil painting captures the distinguished figure of Captain John Croft Hawkins, a prominent naval officer in the 19th century. Dressed in his captain's undress uniform of the Indian Navy, Hawkins exudes an air of authority and command. The intricate details of his attire, from the gold ring on his cuff to the meticulous stitching on his coat, speak to his status and prestige within the maritime world.
Hawkins' life was marked by both triumphs and tribulations. After surviving a severe bout of typhus while serving in the Royal Navy, he transferred to the Bombay Marine where he excelled in his duties. His exemplary service earned him numerous accolades from both British authorities and local governments.
However, Hawkins' career took a dramatic turn when he was accused of piracy in 1830. Despite being sentenced to transportation for seven years, he ultimately received a royal pardon that cleared his name. This portrait serves as a reminder of Hawkins' resilience and determination in overcoming adversity.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this painting is not just a representation of one man's life but also a testament to the rich history and heritage of Britain's naval forces during the 19th century.
