EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "View from Longstone Lighthouse, 1838" by Henry Perlee Parker offers a glimpse into a historic and heroic event. In 1838, the Forfarshire steam ship met its tragic fate on the Farne Islands, but thanks to the bravery of Grace Darling and her father William, Keeper of Longstone Lighthouse, many lives were saved. This artwork was created shortly after the incident when Parker and Carmichael visited the Darlings' home to document their courageous act. The image showcases a breathtaking view of the Farne Islands as seen from the lighthouse's door. The rugged coastline stretches out before us, with rocky cliffs meeting crashing waves. The composition beautifully captures both the serenity and treacherous nature of this coastal scene. As we admire this piece, we can't help but be reminded of Grace Darling's remarkable heroism that turned her into a celebrity overnight. The sketch serves as a testament to her courage and resilience in saving lives amidst perilous conditions. With pencil and watercolor on paper, Parker skillfully brings forth every detail – from the charming cottage nestled near the lighthouse to each individual rock dotting the shoreline. This artwork not only commemorates an extraordinary event but also transports us back in time to witness firsthand this significant moment in maritime history.
