Horatia Nelson (1801-1881), c.1815 (oil on canvas)
7337982 Horatia Nelson (1801-1881), c.1815 (oil on canvas) by British School, (19th century); 195.6x127 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: British School
A full-length portrait full face wearing a white dress, red pumps and wearing a miniature of her father round her neck. She is dancing in a rocky foreground with an imaginary landscape in the distance, a tambourine held high in her left hand and her gaze directly engaging the viewer. It is possible that the portrait was commissioned by Horatia's mother, Emma, since the pose closely relates to a 1792 portrait of her by the French painter, Elisabeth-Louise Vigee Le Brun. This showed Emma as a Bacchante, in which she also dances holding a tambourine, with the smoke from Mount Vesuvius rising in the background. The painting is part of the Nelson-Ward Collection, acquired directly from Horatia's family.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures the youthful exuberance and grace of Horatia Nelson, daughter of the legendary Admiral Lord Nelson. Painted around 1815 by an unknown British artist, Horatia is depicted in a white dress and red pumps, with a miniature of her father hanging around her neck. Her gaze is direct and engaging as she dances with a tambourine held high in her left hand.
The composition of the painting closely mirrors that of a portrait of her mother, Emma Hamilton, by French painter Elisabeth-Louise Vigee Le Brun. In both portraits, the women are shown dancing with tambourines against imaginary landscapes. This suggests that the portrait may have been commissioned by Emma herself.
Horatia's joyous expression and carefree demeanor convey a sense of happiness and innocence that is truly captivating. The painting is part of the Nelson-Ward Collection and offers a rare glimpse into the private life of one of Britain's most celebrated naval heroes.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this beautiful artwork serves as a reminder not only of Horatia's own unique story but also of the enduring legacy left behind by Admiral Lord Nelson.
