Portrait of the Vrede (?), c.1661 (offset, graphite)
7342095 Portrait of the Vrede (?), c.1661 (offset, graphite) by Velde, Willem van de, the Younger (1633-1707); 48.2x41 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Younger
One of two offset drawings of this 46-gun Amsterdam Admiralty ship of 1650 (the other is PAH5009) of which there is also a drawing by the Elder (PAH3837), to which both relate. The ship was last mentioned in 1667. This example shows it from slightly before the starboard beam, in reverse to PAH5009. The fore course is clewed up, the main furled, mizzen half brailed up, fore and main topsails loose on the caps. The drawing is rubbed on the back and cut to exclude the figurehead. It was clearly worked up in pencil by the Younger over faint offsets, probably taken from a work of his father's. The rounded hull form is not well expressed and though the masts and sails of this and PAH5009 have been offset from each other they have been differently developed. This one is doubtfully signed with a cut signature on the back.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait of the 'Vrede' captures the essence of a 46-gun Amsterdam Admiralty ship from 1661. The offset drawing by Willem van de Velde, the Younger, showcases intricate details of the vessel in all its glory. The fore course is clewed up, the main furled, and the mizzen half brailed up, giving us a glimpse into life at sea during that era.
The drawing is a testament to van de Velde's skill as an artist, with his meticulous attention to detail evident in every stroke of graphite. The rounded hull form may not be perfectly expressed, but it adds character to this historical piece.
It is fascinating to note that this particular ship was last mentioned in 1667, making this artwork even more significant as a snapshot of maritime history. The signature on the back adds an air of mystery to the piece, leaving us wondering about its origins and journey through time.
Overall, this portrait of the 'Vrede' is not just a beautiful work of art but also a window into a bygone era when ships like these ruled the seas. It serves as a reminder of our rich naval heritage and stands as a tribute to van de Velde's talent as an artist.
