EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolour print, titled "African Royal Mail Steamer, Lagos, Dyson Weston Commander" takes us back to the 19th century. Created by Albert Ernest Markes, this artwork measures 67x84 cm and is currently housed at the Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery in Kent, UK. The painting depicts The Lagos, a ship with strong connections to Kent and commanded by Dyson Weston (1844-1931). With sails billowing against a turbulent sea backdrop, the vessel exudes both elegance and power. In 1871, Dyson Weston assumed command of The Lagos in Liverpool after serving in the Mercantile Marine Service since he was just sixteen years old. Accompanying this remarkable watercolour is a typescript detailing the fascinating family history associated with it. It includes dramatic accounts of various maritime adventures such as the passage and wreck of the Herculean in 1860 and Dyson Weston's command of The Soudan during the Ashanti War in 1873. Notably mentioned is his encounter with Henry M Stanley at Sierra Leone during this time. The document also sheds light on other notable ships that Dyson Weston sailed on throughout his career. One intriguing passenger aboard The Lagos was Cecil Rhodes when he was only twenty-four years old. Additionally, detailed descriptions are provided about journeys to Canada via an arduous train ride spanning over two thousand miles; a voyage to Italy; and finally sailing to Tasmania in 1891 with his own family members, coachman, servants, and governess for a year-long stay. This extraordinary piece offers viewers not only an exquisite visual experience but also glimpses into historical events intertwined with personal narratives from seafaring days gone by.
