The Second Descent through the Koojah Pass

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating lithograph that takes us back to the historic events of 1839. Created by James Atkinson and beautifully tinted, this print captures a significant moment during the invasion of Afghanistan by the British-Indian Army. In spring 1839, Sir John Keane led a formidable force known as the Army of the Indus on an expedition into Afghanistan. The Khojak Pass, stretching five miles between Quetta and Kandahar, posed a challenging obstacle for their progress. This lithograph portrays the second descent through this treacherous pass. Atkinson, not only a skilled artist but also serving as Superintending Surgeon with the invading force, provides us with an intimate glimpse into this historical event. The scene showcases a line of march consisting of horses, camels, goats, oxen - all essential components in supporting such an extensive military operation. The attention to detail in depicting both human and animal figures adds depth and realism to this artwork. As we observe these brave soldiers navigating their way down steep slopes while carrying shields and weaponry, we are transported back in time to witness their courage firsthand. This lithograph is part of a larger collection titled "Sketches in Afghanistan" which offers further insights into this fascinating period. Preserved at London's National Army Museum since its publication in 1842 by Henry Graves and Company and J W Allen & Company; it serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical record for generations to come.
