An October Day in the White Mountains, 1854 (oil on canvas)
499711 An October Day in the White Mountains, 1854 (oil on canvas)
by Kensett, John Frederick (1816-72); 107.63x152.08 (framed) 79.8x123.5 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Trained as an engraver, Kensett shifted to landscape paintings as a young man. In the summer of 1850, when he was 39, Kensett toured the White Mountains in New Hampshire and sketched this view of Mount Chocurua with the Saco River winding beneath it. Shortly afterward, he created this painting of the scene, which he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1855. Unlike earlier American landscapists, such as Thomas Cole, who reveled in stormy skies and rocky chasms, Kensetts paintings, such as this one, tend to be peaceful in feeling. Kensett was particularly interested in the subtle changes of color and clarity that occur as objects recede into the distance, an effect known as " atmospheric perspective." ); John L. An October Day in the White Mountains, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by John Frederick Kensett that beautifully captures the serene beauty of nature. The artwork showcases Mount Chocurua, majestically rising above the landscape, while the Saco River gently winds its way beneath it. Trained as an engraver, Kensett's transition to landscape paintings proved to be a turning point in his career. During his visit to the White Mountains in New Hampshire in 1850, he sketched this breathtaking view and later transformed it into this masterpiece. The painting was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1855. Unlike other American landscapists of his time who favored dramatic skies and rugged terrains, Kensett's work exudes tranquility and peace. He had a keen interest in capturing subtle changes of color and clarity as objects recede into the distance—a technique known as "atmospheric perspective". This particular print of Kensett's iconic artwork measures 107.63x152.08 cm when framed and 79.8x123.5 cm without framing. It is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The timeless beauty captured within this painting serves as a reminder of our connection with nature and invites viewers to immerse themselves in its peaceful atmosphere—an exquisite piece that continues to captivate art enthusiasts around the world.
