EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Helmet badge of the United Provinces Horse from 1904-1947. Crafted by John Henry Foley, this metal badge features a stunning horseman on a tablet adorned with the battle honor "A Relief of Lucknow". Above it, a scroll proudly displays the name of the auxiliary unit - "United Provinces Horse". The United Provinces Light Horse was established in 1904 through the amalgamation of several light horse units including Allahabad, Cawnpore, Gorakhpur, Ghazipur, and Oudh. The design of the horsemen figure bears resemblance to an equestrian statue sculpted by Foley himself in Calcutta. This statue immortalizes Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram, who played a pivotal role in relieving Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. As we gaze upon this exquisite artifact captured in print form, we are transported back to an era filled with bravery and sacrifice. It serves as a testament to those who served under its banner and fought valiantly for their cause. The intricate details and craftsmanship showcased in this helmet badge remind us not only of its historical significance but also highlight artistry at its finest. Displayed within the National Army Museum in London as part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection, this photograph allows us to appreciate and admire this important relic from British military history.
