SELF-IMMOLATION. GOGOL BURNING HIS MANUSCRIPT, 1909 (oil on canvas)
7215392 SELF-IMMOLATION. GOGOL BURNING HIS MANUSCRIPT, 1909 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia; (add.info.: 1909//Oil on canvas
Repine knew very well the work of Nicolas Gogol (1809-1852), from which he drew inspiration several times. Created for the centenary of the writers birth, this painting evokes the destruction by him of the second volume of his book Dead Souls. This episode resonated strongly with the painter, whom his contemporaries compared to the man of letters, as his obsessive dissatisfaction pushed him to constantly retouch his canvases. Here, Repine focuses on Gogols convulsed face, which is theatrically lit by the fire in the fireplace that has just reduced his manuscript to ashes.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a powerful moment in history, depicting the self-immolation of Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. Painted by Ilya Repin in 1909, this oil on canvas artwork showcases Gogol burning the second volume of his book Dead Souls. The destruction of his manuscript symbolizes his inner turmoil and dissatisfaction as an artist. Repin's deep understanding of Gogol's work is evident in this painting, as he focuses on capturing the intensity of emotions on Gogol's face. The theatrical lighting from the fireplace illuminates his convulsed expression, emphasizing the significance of this act. The artist himself was known for constantly retouching his own canvases due to his obsessive dissatisfaction, drawing parallels between him and Gogol. This connection resonated strongly with Repin and inspired him to create this piece for the centenary celebration of Gogol's birth. In addition to portraying Gogol's internal struggle, Repin also includes elements such as firegrates, fire irons, and a servant attending to emphasize the domestic setting where this dramatic event takes place. This image not only pays tribute to one of Russia's greatest writers but also serves as a reminder that artists often grapple with their own creative demons. It stands as a testament to both Repin's artistic skill and his ability to capture profound human experiences through paintbrush strokes.
