MODEST MUSSORGSKY, 1881 (oil on canvas)
7215332 MODEST MUSSORGSKY, 1881 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia; (add.info.: 1881//Oil on canvas
Repine intensely admired the work of Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881). In return, the musician valued his painting a lot. In February 1881, the painter learned of the critical condition of the composer, victim of attacks of depression aggravated by alcoholism. At the beginning of March, he went to Saint Petersburg and painted his portrait in four sessions at the Nikolaevsky military hospital, where Mussorgsky was treated. Here, Repine creates a singular and striking portrait: the model appears in her inner clothes in the privacy of her hospital room, shaggy, her face congested and reddened, sick, but profoundly present. Mussorgsky died a few days later, at the age of forty-two.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense and poignant portrait of Modest Mussorgsky, painted by Ilya Efimovich Repin in 1881. The painting, displayed at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia, showcases Repin's admiration for the composer and Mussorgsky's deep appreciation for his art. Repin learned of Mussorgsky's critical condition due to depression and alcoholism in February 1881. Moved by this news, he immediately traveled to Saint Petersburg to paint the composer's portrait at the Nikolaevsky military hospital where he was being treated. In four sessions, Repin skillfully depicts a vulnerable yet striking image of Mussorgsky. In this singular portrayal, Mussorgsky is seen wearing his inner clothes within the privacy of his hospital room. His shaggy appearance and congested face reveal his illness but also convey a profound presence that captivates viewers. Sadly, just days after completing this portrait at age forty-two, Mussorgsky passed away. The photograph beautifully captures Sylvain Collet's reproduction of Repin's masterpiece from Fine Art Finder. It serves as a reminder not only of an extraordinary artist capturing another through their respective mediums but also highlights the fragility of human existence amidst great talent and creativity. With its rich historical context and artistic significance, this print invites us to reflect on our own mortality while appreciating both Modest Mussorgsky's musical legacy and Ilya Efimovich Repin's masterful brushwork.
