EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Elephant Automaton Clock, a masterpiece created in Augsburg during the late 16th century. Crafted from silvered bronze, enamelled silver, and gilt-bronze, this magnificent timepiece stands at an impressive height of 35 cm. The clock takes the form of a majestic elephant adorned with a howdah resembling a castle tower. Four turbaned soldiers wielding raised scimitars gracefully rotate around the tower as it moves forward in a slight circle. The intricate details continue with two enameled dials and two glass dials that offer glimpses into the inner workings of this mechanical marvel. The eyes of the elephant even come to life, adding an element of enchantment to its already mesmerizing presence. Accompanying the creature are two mahouts - one riding on its back and another walking alongside. Resting upon a silver-mounted ebony and ebonized pearwood veneered base over an oak carcass, this clock is not only visually stunning but also houses further mechanics that propel it forward. Although currently partially non-functioning, restoration holds promise for restoring its full functionality. This photograph captures every intricate detail and serves as a testament to both artistic skill and technical ingenuity. It offers viewers a glimpse into history while igniting their imagination with thoughts of ancient kingdoms where such remarkable creations were cherished treasures.
