Flat landscape with a view to distant hills, 1648 (oil on panel)
3927270 Flat landscape with a view to distant hills, 1648 (oil on panel) by Koninck, Phillips de (1619-88); 29.8x40.8 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: Koninck's panoramic views were among the most innovative developments in Dutch landscape painting. He was inspired by the broad plains of his native Gelderland, and this subject dominated much of his work. This early example may show the influence of Rembrandt in its contrasts of light and shade. Koninck suggests the expansiveness of the land through horizontal bands of mossy greens and browns. The eye is led back through these planes, which give the small panel a surprising sense of space and recession. The minute figures and the dog chasing birds provide a sense of scale. The view may look convincing, but the distant mountains are not typical of the terrain of Holland. Like most Dutch 17th century paintings, it is a reconstruction of reality, assembled from outdoor sketches and from memory.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Koninck's masterpiece, "Flat landscape with a view to distant hills" painted in 1648. The oil on panel artwork, measuring 29.8x40.8 cm, is housed in the prestigious Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Koninck was renowned for his innovative approach to Dutch landscape painting, and this piece exemplifies his talent. Inspired by the vast plains of Gelderland, his native region, Koninck skillfully captures the essence of these landscapes through contrasting light and shade reminiscent of Rembrandt's influence. The painting features horizontal bands of mossy greens and browns that create an expansive sense of space and depth within such a small panel. The inclusion of minute figures and a dog chasing birds adds a touch of scale to the scene. While seemingly realistic at first glance, it is important to note that this composition is not an accurate depiction but rather a reconstruction assembled from outdoor sketches and memory—a common practice among Dutch painters during the 17th century. Despite deviating from Holland's typical terrain with its distant mountains, this artwork remains visually striking. Its ability to transport viewers into an imagined reality speaks volumes about Koninck's mastery as an artist. Bridgeman Images holds the copyright for this remarkable print capturing Koninck's enduring legacy at Manchester Art Gallery.
