Detail of Apollo and Daphne.
Frescoes by Baldassarre Peruzzi and workshop (Giulio Romano?) 1517-18.
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detail of the fresco "Apollo and Daphne" by Baldassarre Peruzzi and his workshop, located in the Villa Farnesina in Rome, Italy. The artwork is part of the Hall of Perspectives, featuring an extensive frieze depicting mythological scenes inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. In this particular scene, Apollo reaches out towards Daphne with conviction, believing he has finally caught up to her. However, as he grasps her, he realizes that she has begun to transform into a tree. Daphne desperately wants to continue running forward, causing her upper body to lean ahead while her legs remain rooted in place. Her metamorphosis is on the verge of completion. A figure with a thick white beard can be seen lying before Daphne, leaning against an urn. This character represents Peneus, the river god and father of Daphne. He has listened to his daughter's prayers and granted her wish for transformation into a tree so that she may fulfill her vow of chastity. Surrounding these central figures are nymphs and other river deities who play supporting roles in this enthralling narrative. The photograph captures not only the exquisite artistry but also the emotional intensity conveyed through Peruzzi's brushstrokes. It serves as a testament to both ancient mythology and Renaissance artistic mastery.
